Outside Art is a proud Community Partner
with the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council. 

 

The following programs provide opportunities for Girl Scouts to develop leadership skills within the Girl Scout’s 3 Pillars of Leadership: Discover, Connect and Take Action. With the following programs, Girl Scouts will: Discover art, nature and their inner-selves, Connect to the natural world and others through the art process, and Take Action through the messages expressed in their art, and the actions taken through and with the power of their creations.  Some examples of Girl Scout actions with Outside Art outcomes include having an art show, or auction with the proceeds going to a designated charity, creating a puppet show that educates about  a specific problem or cause, and using their art to bring joy and beauty to an environment and people that need it.

 

Drawing Nature 

Participants will learn how to sketch, draw and identify our desert trees, plants, cacti, birds, and other available wildlife models in this fun art program!  This class includes demonstrations of the tricks that artists use to capture the shape, texture, shadows and three dimensional aspects of plants and animals.  Students will learn how to use a variety of shading pencils and compose a drawing like a professional artist. This 90 minute class is open to Brownies, Cadette and Junior Girl Scouts.

Sumi-e Painting

Brownie and Girl Scouts in this activity will learn traditional eastern approaches to nature and landscape painting in this unique outdoor art class . Students will learn about traditional Chinese painting media, such as the bamboo brush, sumi-e ink, rice paper and suzuri inkwell. Each young artist will have opportunities to create beautiful nature scenes and landscapes inspired by eastern painting styles and Chinese painting tradition. This two hour class is open to Brownies, Junior and Cadette Girlscouts.

Class Times: TBD (2 hours of instruction)    * This activity can be longer and tailored for specific badges affordably.

Cost: $ 18 per student, per 2 hours of instruction, plus $4 per participant for materials

Nature’s Wonders in Watercolor

Aspiring Girl Scout and Brownie artists will learn how to paint from the real natural life around them in this exciting “plien air” (outside) watercolor class.  Techniques to draw, compose and paint nature scenes, landscapes, water scenes, wildlife and birds will be presented along with many professional watercolor techniques. This two hour class is open to Brownies, Junior and Cadette Girl Scouts.

Class Times: TBD (2 hours of instruction)   

Location: TBD   * Outside Art will schedule and reserve a natural location for a $20 fee.

Cost: $ 18 per student, including materials

Animal Pottery

Brownie , Junior, and Cadette Girl Scouts will learn how to make pottery resembling a favorite animal in this creative clay class.  Additionally, hand-building, pinch-pot and scoring methods will be demonstrated along with a historical and cultural overview of folk art pottery. All pottery will be fired and returned to the troop after two weeks for painting. This class does not include painting or glazing options. A continuing workshop in painting or glazing the pottery is available for the same price.  Tailored lessons are also available for other forms of pottery.

Class Times: TBD (2 ½  hours of instruction)   

Location: TBD   * Outside Art will schedule and reserve a natural location for a $20 fee.

Cost: $ 20 per student, per 2 hours of programming,  including materials and firing cost

Group Rate: $200 per 2 ½  hours of programming, including materials and firing cost

Hand-Built Pottery

Hand-building, shape forming, coil, pinch-pot and scoring methods will be demonstrated along with historical and cultural overview of pottery. All pottery will be fired and returned to the troop after two weeks for painting. This class does not include painting or glazing options. A continuing workshop in painting or glazing the pottery is available for the same price.  Tailored lessons are also available for other forms of pottery.

Animal Fetish Beads

Brownie , Junior, and Cadette Girl Scouts will learn how to make small animal fetish beads of their favorite animals in this fun outdoor clay class.  Additionally, participants will learn the historical and cultural aspects of animal charms . All fetish beads will be fired and returned to the troop after one week. This class does not include jewelry assembling options. A continuing workshop in jewelry assembling is available for the same price.

Milagros

In this unique and meaningful activity, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts will learn how to make their own meaningful   milagro (“miracle” charm) in tin.  A milagro is a votive charm used in Mexican, South American and other cultures to represent gratitude for a miracle or a miracle request.  Girl Scouts in this activity will learn the art and history of milagros and other votive charms while designing and creating their own. Milagros may be used to represent miracles, and appreciations in the lives of Girl Scout troop members, family members, community members, and friends. 3-D, embossing and metal forming techniques will be demonstrated. This activity is a great opportunity for Girl Scouts to share the struggles, thanksgivings and miracles of their lives with their troop, families and community!

Sculpting Puppet Heads

Brownie and Girl Scouts will learn how to sculpt a traditional styled ceramic or paper-clay puppet head using 3-D sculpting techniques. Sculpting facial features, placement and molding methods will be demonstrated. A general cultural and historical overview in puppetry will be presented as well. For no additional fee, all ceramic puppet heads will be fired and returned to the troop after two weeks for painting and assembly. This class does not include painting and cloth body assembly. Continuing workshops in puppet head painting and embellishing, as well as cloth body assemblage are available for the same price per session.

Mural Workshop

Outside Art offers mural workshops that help children apply their own ideas and styles while learning mural procedures, painting styles, design elements and a wide variety of art techniques. When the workshop ends, the troop will have created a beautiful collaborative mural. This workshop is a great opportunity for Girl Scouts to take action with their art. Murals can be a form of community service, providing beautification or images with valuable messages for hospitals, children’s centers, churches and other places in need of beautification. It is the troop’s responsibility to find and have institutional or owner’s approval for the mural location before the workshop begins. Scheduling may require varied times, depending on the mural location. Prior to the actual mural execution, this workshop will require a two hour mural planning  meeting with the troop and possibly representatives from the mural location.

Cost: $ 10, per student, per hour, plus materials fees*

 * A time  estimation will be determined in the preliminary planning meeting. Outside Art will assist in planning a size and composition that meets the scheduling needs of both the troop and mural hosting institution. Mural workshop materials fees may vary due to the size of the mural space, and paint donation acquisitions.

Any cancellations by Outside the Box programs will be refunded.  There are no prorated fees and cancellations on the part of parents or troop leaders are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
